Kan Kishino is an artist who relentlessly pursues the path of ceramics, while drawing inspiration from ancient pottery. If the renowned ceramicists of the Momoyama period, who created masterpieces in Japan, were present in modern times, one could imagine them being akin to Kishino. In the realm of tea ceramics, he crafts vessels that enhance the enjoyment of tea, while in the domain of sake ware, he designs pieces that invite relaxation and savoring. As for tableware, he creates pieces that elevate the presentation of dishes, drawing upon the artistic techniques he learned from tea ceramics. Continuously, he produces pottery that enriches our lives through its practical use. This sake ware is fired using a technique called "Mishima-de." Derived from the Korean Peninsula, Mishima-de involves pressing patterns, such as stamped imprints, into the semi-dry clay body. The artist then fills these carved areas with slip to create decorative motifs. The contrasting glaze tones between the carved and uncarved sections enhance the beauty of the piece, providing a delightful tactile experience when held in one's hands.
