Shigaraki ware primarily consists of various utensils such as seed jars, water bottles, and pots that were used by farmers for seed storage. Its distinctive feature lies in the rustic and warm texture derived from the clay at the bottom of Lake Biwa, which gives the surface of the pottery a rough appearance with numerous small stone particles embedded in it. Shigaraki ware often exhibits a phenomenon called "yohen," where various patterns emerge during the firing process, adding to its unique charm with rich expressions on the surface of the clay. While many antique Shigaraki large jars may have cracks, this particular piece is in excellent condition without any cracks. The shape and style of the jar display characteristics typical of earlier times, with the upper part of the vessel being larger. As time passed, the bottoms of such jars tended to become broader, which also contributes their sculptural beauty. Although this jar can be used as a vase for flowers, or for art of object, without any additional adornments.
